Abstract: |
A walkover survey was undertaken of c.100 acres of agricultural land located on the eastern edge of Horley. Evidence of probable medieval ridge and furrow cultivation was found which appeared to have been superseded by post-medieval enclosed fields. An extant footpath may have been a medieval routeway from the castle to the south. The layout of the post-medieval enclosed fields themselves had apparently remained largely unchanged from their appearance approximately 200-300 years ago, with ditches, field-banks and shaws marking their boundaries. No evidence of actual occupation was located during the survey. [Au] |
