Abstract: |
A survey of available information revealed a very small number of entries for the Herne Hill area in general, with a single stray find representing the prehistoric period in this area, and no entries documenting Roman or Saxon activity. The medieval and post-medieval presence in the area was in the form of a road and settlement noted from documentary sources and dating to around the 16th century. Cartographic evidence revealed that the site was in an area of undeveloped land until about the late 19th century. Sometime after 1870 the buildings which fronted Rosendale Road were constructed and subsequently various outbuildings were erected towards the rear. [Au(adp)] |
