Abstract: |
Desk-basd assessment of the proposed site of an office development identified that no pre-medieval sites had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, although significant concentrations of Mesolithic flintwork had been found to the south and west. The town of Reigate had originated as a planned new town of the late 12th century. It was situated below the Norman castle, and had replaced an earlier settlement known as Cherchefelle. The proposal site lay outside the bailey of the castle and to the east of the medieval town, and had probably lain to the west of Cherchfelle. It was concluded that the site had only a very limited general archaeological potential, although its 20th century history suggested that any remains which may have existed were unlikely to have been severely damaged. It was recommended that a limited programme of trial trenching should be carried out, as there was a slight possibility that the interpretation of the medieval development of the area had been erroneous.
