Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for mineral extraction identified that a number of archaeological sites had been recorded within a 1km radius of the proposal area. Artefacts found included Mesolithic flints, an Early Bronze Age axe, Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon pottery and a Roman finger ring. A Bronze Age occupation site, a number of cropmarks, the site of an ancient mill and the possible site of a Tudor manor house had also been recorded. During fieldwalking at the site itself, flints of Neolithic/Bronze Age date and late post-medieval artefacts had been recovered. It was noted that the site covered a large area, much of which had escaped development to an extent where any archaeological deposits present would have been destroyed. A field evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
