Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken as part of a planning condition. The preliminary desk-based assessment found that the site lay in an area peripheral to the core of the medieval town and beyond the town ditch, which delineated the extent of the ancient borough. Recent excavations and investigations beyond these limits had, however, recovered evidence for medieval suburban activity, closely dated by pottery sequences to the period 1100-1350. A primary research objective for Huntingdon remained the establishment of further information about the extent and duration of such suburban expansion. The evaluation (consisting of single 10m by 2m trial trench) revealed a single large post-medieval pit to occupy the majority of the 10m long trench. It was probably infilled when the area was developed in the late 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
