Abstract:
A watching brief during trenching for a water main failed to identify features of archaeological importance within cropmark complexes to the east of Normanton. The extent of sand deposits along Brotts Road was recorded, and this correlated closely with the zone of archaeological features visible on air photographs. An area of low ground west of High Marnham was tentatively interpreted as the course of a former river channel. High Marnham Church may be built on a deliberately created mound of contemporary date. Post-medieval drainage features, flood-banks and road surfaces were recorded in several locations. A single 18th century pottery sherd with glaze covering a break might indicated a nearby kiln at Normanton on Trent although it may have been from a substandard but useable product. [Au]
