Abstract: |
It was proposed to redevelop the site with the erection of a five-storey block of residential flats. The study showed that the application area had been developed at least from the mid 16th century and most probably from the medieval period. Numerous changes had taken place by the early 18th century with many of the properties having a commercial function. By 1775, No. 84 St. Thomas Street was being used as an inn under the sign of the 'Wheat Sheaf'. The application area suffered extensive damage by enemy action during the 1940s after which the present building was erected. The present building, now known as No. 40, had an extensive basement that was likely to have removed all archaeological evidence. However, the study suggested that between the present building and the original street archaeology was likely to have suffered little disturbance. [Au] |
