Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. The report concluded that it was clear from the SMR that the archaeological potential of the development site and the surrounding area was relatively good. The record highlighted the potential of further archaeological remains existing relating to prehistoric and subsequent activity in the area. Several cropmarks of ring ditches had been identified from aerial photographs, such as SMR no. 811, sited to the west of the development area. Numerous other prehistoric artefacts had been recovered, either through river dredging or as a result of gravel extraction. A Middle Bronze Age ferrule had been found associated with what appeared to be an old river channel. Therefore weapons could have been deposited in parts of the river, which were now no longer visible, and have been incorporated into the river terrace geology. It was therefore possible that buried river channels existed within the proposed development area. The site investigation report illustrated that there was ground water seepage at 1.5m-2.4m. The probable medieval stock enclosure 'Caesar's Camp', which was predated by Bronze Age activity, was located just over a kilometre to the north east of the proposed development site. The cartographic evidence illustrated, from the earliest Warburton map, 1749, to the First Edition 6" OS map, that the development land remained undeveloped, and mainly used as arable land until the early 20th century. There were no indications on any of the maps that the land contained any structural features. This implied that any potential archaeological deposits within this area had remind undisturbed apart from agricultural activity, such as ploughing. The site had been heavily disturbed in the main area of the new structural development. The total development covered an area just over 0.7ha, of which approximately 05.ha had escaped development to an extent where any near surface archaeological evidence that may have existed had been destroyed. The report recommended further archaeological trial trenching. [Au(adp)] |
