Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed construction of a basemented five-storey extension. The site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area but did not contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings. There was little evidence of activity occurring in the vicinity of the proposed development site until the post-medieval period when the area began to develop. Prior to this the area had contained marshland. The site remained as open land until the middle of the 19th century. It was probable that little archaeology existed upon the site, apart from possible paleo-environmental evidence dating to the prehistoric period, as found in numerous excavations in the area, and the possibility that post-medieval building foundations may have existed in some areas of the site. It was recommended therefore that an archaeological watching brief with the possibility of environmental sampling be conducted upon any piling foundations carried out during construction and upon the extension of the basement.
