Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay within the area where the Battle of Tewkesbury was fought on May 4th 1471, and that evidence of medieval ridge and furrow lay across the site. Evidence of Bronze Age activity had been found c. 500m to the north-west, and Romano-British remains had been recorded in the area, including a settlement, a cemetery and many artefacts. A Saxon or early Norman timber hall and a possible early medieval burial lay near the site, and later medieval activity had also been recorded in the area. It was recommended that an archaeological evaluation should be carried out, although it was noted that an absence of battlefield remains would not indicate that the site had lain outside the battlefield area.
