Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a nursing home and housing units identified that findspots of a Late Neolithic discoidal knife, other prehistoric flints, medieval pottery and a fragment of clay pipe had been recorded in the surrounding area, and that an earthwork feature of possible medieval date lay to the south-east. A dubious mound and a skeleton of probable post-medieval date had also been recorded. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site had lain within a largely rural, agricultural landscape in the post-medieval period. The main building at the site itsef was a locally-listed structure dating from the turn of the 20th century. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential, but that much of it had been disturbed by recent development. It was recommended that a watching brief should be undertaken during construction work, focusing primarily on the area of the kitchen garden, which was undeveloped at the time of the report. [AIP] |
