Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of cable trenches and holes for floodlight boxes at the base of a church tower. A medieval cross stood in the churchyard, and a medieval pillory was situated to the west. The church itself was mainly of 14th-15th century date. During the watching brief, part of a grave which probably dated from the mid-18th century or later was revealed, and it was found that concrete had been poured to a considerable depth around much of the western end of the church. The concrete may have related to the rebuilding of the spire in 1888. Large sandstone blocks forming the foundations of the tower's two buttresses appeared to date from its original construction.
