Abstract:		 An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a reservoir, which lay within an area rich in archaeological remains. A prehistoric trackway passed nearby, and several flint scatters had been identified during archaeological work associated with the construction of a water pipeline running to the north. A presumed Bronze Age round barrow which was a SAM lay nearby, and further ring ditches had been identified on aerial photographs. Geophysical survey and fieldwalking of two areas originally designated for the site of the reservoir and contractors' compound had resulted in the identification of a ditched enclosure. This was provisionally interpreted as a Neolithic mortuary enclosure, based on the proximity of up to five round barrows, the presence of worked flints and the general morphology. Evaluation of the revised proposal site involved geophysical survey and the excavation of trial trenches. The survey recorded weak anomalies, suggesting the remains of a rectilinear field system. The trenches revealed part of a Late Iron Age enclosure and a group of chalk extraction pits, which were probaby of post-medieval or later date, and which lay outside the enclosure.
