Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a sports centre identified that four mills had lain in the vicinity, and that a Mesolithic scraper and a Bronze Age mace head had been found nearby. A small remnant of a former millpond lay in the south-east corner of the site. During a site visit, an inspection of various excavated areas revealed that made ground occupied most of the area to a depth of 2m or more. This appeared to have represented the infilled pond. No features of potential archaeological interest were identified, although a plain Victorian building formerly used as a mortuary house was present. It was concluded that the impact of the proposed development on previously undisturbed ground would be very limited. It was recommended that a watching brief shoud be undertaken during excavation of the deep end of the proposed swimming pool. [AIP] |
