Abstract: |
Previous work had been undertaken in the 1960's during the preparation of foundation laying. This concluded that there was no archaeology evident except on the southern strip besides Lower Thames Street. An evaluation test pit in the pavement next to the site revealed that, despite truncation by previous cellars, there was survival of an archaeological feature containing early medieval and residual Roman finds. Nearby excavation had revealed substantial Roman and medieval waterfronts and Roman, Saxon and medieval buildings. It was expected that these would have continued into the area occupied by the site, however the report concluded that there appeared to be only limited areas where archaeological remains might have survived.
