Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of two trenches. Trench 1 produced evidence of substantial foundations of the west end of the Abbey which had been almost completely robbed of stone but was traceable in the form of robber trenches. The robber trenches had themselves been extensively disturbed by archaeological trenching from 1929-1930. A substantial amount of residual finds were recovered from the earlier excavation trenches. A north-south ditch was also revealed which appeared to pre-date the construction of the north-western corner of the Abbey. The ditch appeared to date from the mid-11th century, and it was possible that all the pottery in it was pre-Norman conquest. Trench 2 was excavated across the foot of a buttress constructed in 1913, the foundation of which had removed a large area of deposits, probably of post-Dissolution date. A stone footing was revealed which was believed to be the former churchyard wall which was still extant in the 1950s. [Au(abr)] |
