Abstract: |
Archaeological observations were made at a construction site. A preliminary assessment had recommended that excavation of the deep end of a swimming pool should be monitored, but that other work on site would not be deep enough to affect any archaeological remains. However, on arrival at the site, it was found that work on the swimming pool had been delayed, so the opportunity was taken to examine other excavated areas. Fill deposits were found to exist at depths of up to 4m below ground level. The deep end of the swimming pool was subsequently inspected, and it was observed that dumped modern debris extended to almost the full depth of the excavation. A photographic record of a Victorian mortuary structure at the site was to have been made, but the structure was demolished before this was accomplished. It was concluded that any material of archaeological interest which may once have existed would probably have been removed or disturbed by 20th century use of the site. [AIP] |
