Abstract: |
Desktop assessment of a site proposed for redevelopment identified that the original bank of the River Avon lay several metres further inland in the medieval period than it does today, and that Welsh Bank itself was paved long before the creation of Queen Square, suggesting commercial activity in the medieval period. Excavations nearby had also identified 16th and 17th century docks comprising features which had been infilled with substantial quantities of ceramic and organic waste. The presence of alluvial clays sealed beneath the present buildings also suggested the survival of important palaeoenvironmental remains. [Au adap] |
