Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site proposed for sand extraction, which lay immediately to the south of a concentration of archaeological material, including a Bronze Age type-site of national importance. An initial geophysical survey of the site had proved disappointing, but had identified traces of two linear anomalies. These were investigated by trial trenching, but were interpreted as natural variations in the subsoil. Several ambiguous features were excavated in one area, but were interpreted as being either modern or possibly natural in origin. The lack of archaeological artefacts within both the excavated features and the topsoil suggested that no intensive activity had taken place in the immediate vicinity of the present trenches.
