Abstract: |
The excavation of two trenches in advance of building work uncovered a sequence of archaeological features dating from at least the 13th century. Historical sources suggested a long history of commercial premises fronting onto the Angel Hill. This was consistent with the archaeological evidence - numerous pits and several ovens were discovered which contained domestic-type waste. Of particular interest was the corner of a flint and mortar lined cellar, which may have dated from the 13th century. Its position, in what was presumed to be a backyard area, was unusual and, as yet, unexplained. A large amount of peg-tile and mortar footings was evidence of later medieval to early post-medieval buildings, probably stables and other outbuildings associated with the main street. [Au] |
