Abstract:
The watching brief resulted from plans to renew existing sewer arrangements in an area to the east of High Street, involving Nelthorpe Street, Sibthorp Street, Monson Street, Ripon Street, St. Andrew's Street and Pennell Street. The section of the excavation that was deemed most likely to hold valuable archaeological remains was within the Pennell Street area which lay over the remains of burials associated with the medieval church of St. Michael of Wigford. This section of the sewer replacement yielded the remains of between 130 and 140 individuals, with associated late 9th to 15th century pottery sherds. These did not answer specific quenstions relating to the inhumation dates of individual burials, but did support a possible foundation date for the church around the time of the Norman Conquest, with abandonment taking place in the 15th/early 16th century. Considerable information relating to the demographic profile of the inhabitants of the parish had been revealed by the specialist analysis of the human remains, although again, it was considered that the sample size was insufficient to provide a complete interpretation of the area. The final area offering evidence for occupation, albeit much less substantial, was Monson Street. It was possible that multiple layers of dumped material. and perhaps occupation surfaces, were present within the trench sections. [Au(adp)]
