Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of proposals to redevelop the site. The assessment found that the site lay in the formerly open countryside around Chertsey, which became extensively urbanised from the late 19th century onwards. The local geology and soil conditions presupposed some activity in the area in the past, though archaeological discoveries in the area were sparse and no known remains were known from the vicinity. The sites of several 19th and 20th century buildings impinged on parts of the area particularly to the east, and with contemporary structures and service runs, may have partially truncated any surviving deposits.
