Abstract:
Preliminary assessment of the proposed route of the A40 widening scheme at Ryeford, near Weston-under-Penyard, was carried out on behalf of the Engineering and Planning Department of Hereford & Worcester County Council. The assessment was intended to comprise a combination of desktop survey, walkover survey and transect fieldwalking. However, fieldwalking was severely curtailed by crop cover and non-arable landuse. A small artefactual assemblage was recovered, and this broadly corroborated the results of the desktop survey. The route lies to the south of the Roman industrial town of Ariconium, and skirts the southern edge of the medieval settlement of Ryeford. The assessment identified two areas of high archaeological potential. The first area, lying towards the west of the proposed route, has a high potential for the discovery of Roman deposits and artefacts, notably those associated with the Roman road from Ariconium to the Forest of Dean, an important transit route for raw material for the iron smelting industry. At the second area, lying further to the east on the south side of the medieval settlement of Ryeford, there exists a high potential for the discovery of archaeological deposits and associated artefactual and ecofactual evidence, probably arising from medieval settlement and agricultural practice. There additionally exists a potential for prehistoric and Roman discoveries in this area.[AIP]
