Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of eight test-pits in the area of Reigate Town Hall, in advance of proposals for centralisation. The deposits encountered within three pits appeared very similar, and were considered to represent part of the course of the castle moat, relating to an episode of silting rather than infilling. Finds from the moat included pottery sherds, all of which may have dated to the 13th century, and part of a small cylindrical column. Two further pits contained deposits of archaeological interest; both encountered a layer of loose grey sand, recorded elsewhere in the vicinity of the medieval town. The colour of these deposits was assumed to have derived from the admixture of organic matter, mostly through tilling. The observations suggested the continuation of the moat well beyond the known extent as shown on a plan of 1785. [AIP] |
