Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment concluded that the potential for prehistoric and Roman remains was uncertain, but there was a high possibility that medieval and post-medieval would be present, as the site lay on the edge of the medieval planned town. Izod's Map of 1827 showed two buildings of uncertain date in the southern half of the site, one was demolished between 1938 and 65, but foundations may still survive. The eastern part of the site was situated on alluvium and possibly contained buried archaeology. Levelling had occurred on most of the site, except on the east site and although this would have truncated the ground in places, much of the original ground level appeared to have survived relatively intact. However, it should be noted that in addition to terracing, the building of the factory would have involved other construction impacts across much of the site. [Au(adp)] |
