Abstract:
A detailed documentary survey and visual inspection was carried out in response to plans for a new bypass. This survey of a 200m wide corridor centred upon the proposed road, gained information on the history of Longhorsley village and the possible impact of the road. This included information on its medieval development, land use history, church and mill. From cartigraphic evidence, the village seems to be have been a two-row settlement using open or strip fields as the main enclosure pattern. 22 field enclosures were examined on the ground, revealing mostly ridge and furrow remains but also evidence of a former trackway. The visual impact on the nearby SSSI and Listed Buildings is also considered and it is noted that a section of Roman road runs through Longhorsley village. The report also recommends further investigation into the reason for the separation of St Helen's Church from the village. [AIP]
