Abstract: |
Archaeological investigations at the former Central Hotel site were undertaken in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The site was located in a potential archaeologically sensitive area, adjacent to the River Allen. A record was made of redeposited 18th and 19th century layers which were found to cover the site. However, the most important discovery was the identification of a number of walls, a buried land surface and the location of the original riverbank which were buried beneath the later infill deposits. The archaeological work also produced a large number of artefacts; although the majority of them were redeposited within later contexts. [Au] |
