Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in order to provide information on the location and current condition of a water main in Throckey. The western 450m of the stretch of water main investigated lay across the county border in Northumberland. For the most part the line of this pipe lay within the Hadrian's Wall Corridor, comprising the area between the northern lip of the Wall Ditch and the southern mound of the Vallum, which was designated as a SAM (26037 and 28). Consequently, the watching brief was carried out under a Class Consent Order so that the impact of renewal works on archaeological deposits could be assessed and suitable mitigation strategies formulated prior to the granting of Scheduled Monument Consent. During the course of the watching brief the foundation of Hadrian's Wall was located in Trench 10. Buried soils and other deposits of archaeological interest were also identified in a number of other investigation trenches. The project identified the line and condition of the water pipe in the majority of the study area without disturbing archaeological deposits of significance. [Au(abr)]
