Abstract: |
A desk-based archaeological assessment was undertaken as part of the design stage for a PFI project to develop the Magistrates' Court in St Paul's Square. The assessment reviewed the available documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence for the site and placed it within the historical context of St Paul's Square and Bedford as a whole. The study showed that the site had significant archaeological potential, deriving from its situation at the centre of the historic core of Bedford, close to St Paul's Church and the river. The site had the potential to address a number of important research themes associated with the development of urban centres from the early medieval period to the present day. In particular, there was a high possibility of deeply stratified archaeological deposits associated with Saxon and medieval waterfronts, which could be of national as well as regional and local importance.
