Abstract: |
The construction of a water pipeline had the potential to disturb archaeological remains associated with a linear cropmark. This cropmark, which was visible on an aerial photograph of 1946, appeared to run from Welton Hall eastwards towards the Whittle Dene Reservoirs. This cropmark feature was potentially of considerable importance as it may have been associated with Hadrian's Wall, which lay 500m to the north of the proposed route of the pipeline. There was no sign of the cropmark in the pipe trench. It had possibly been removed by ploughing subsequent to 1946. Three dressed, machine-cut coping stones (?) from an enclosure wall were discovered. They were a buff sandstone, bevelled, and with fine saw-marks visible. [Au(adp)] |
