Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the submission of a planning application for the redevelopment of the site. The total development covered an area of c.0.4ha, the majority of which showed signs of extreme ground disturbance to an extent where any archaeological evidence that may have existed had been destroyed, and this was certainly seen to be the case at the neighbouring site, 15 London Street. Although the archaeological potential for the site may be regarded as good, its position within or adjacent to the area of the medieval town and the fact that surviving evidence of ancient activity has probably been removed the recommendation was that no further archaeological work was necessary.
