Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the seeking of planing permission for the development of residential houses and units, associated car parking and amenities and access roads. The area surrounding the proposal site contained numerous sites indicating a long use of the area, with evidence for the prehistoric period, Roman, Saxon and medieval times. The nature of the evidence did not indicate the extent or intensity of the occupation of the area during such periods, but rather highlighted the archaeological potential of the area. The inclusion of the site within an 'Archaeological Priority Area' was based on the close proximity of the River Crane. The corridors of all water courses were preferentially occupied in both prehistoric and historic times and this was shown to be the case of the vicinity of the site with the excavation in the Marshalling Yards to the north of the proposal site producing finds and deposits of various periods. Similarly, in late Saxon and medieval times the river banks were used for watermills. The recognition by the Borough of the potential of the area would undoubtedly require a field evaluation to determine the nature of any archaeological deposits that might be present. The examination of cartographic and historic sources indicated that, historically, the proposal site formed part of the Hounslow Heath until at least the early 19th century. After this time the site remained relatively undisturbed in terms of land use until the 20th century. While borehole information indicated that the surface of the natural gravel was covered with up to 1m of made ground, there was no indication that the natural geology, and hence, the archaeologically relevant layers, had been truncated by previous land use. The nature of the proposed development indicated that such layers may be disturbed by the construction of the housing within the site. As such, it was recommended that a field evaluation be carried out. [Au(adp)]
