Abstract:
Excavations were carried out in advance of a new house on a site within the medieval suburb on the southern approach to the medieval bridge over the Avon. These revealed a sequence of buildings, at first post hole structures but later with stone foundations, fronting onto the causeway leading to the bridge from the 12th century onwards. Before building took place the ground level was raised by dumping layers of ironworking slag and ash, possibly from nearby forges. In the 18th century, and possibly earlier, some clay- and possible timber-lined pits may have elated to the use of part of the site as a 'whitawyers' yard, a process suggested by documents relating to the site. The site became part of Warwick Castle's park following the construction of the new bridge to the east in 1793 which resulted in the main roads south by-passing the area. Bridge End thereafter became a quiet backwater and the houses facing onto the causeway fell into disuse with the last being demolished at some time between 1806 and 1850. [Au(abr)]
