Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the remediation and demolition works on the commercial site of Temple Quay. Known features of archaeological significance in the Temple Quay area included: the medieval Portwall and ditch, industrial premises formerly located on Temple Back and Pipe Lane, a 19th century malthouse, the Jewish burial ground, oil and tallow works, ropewalk and the covered goods yard adjacent to Temple Meads Railway Station, and its associated barge dock. A large number of structures were observed during the watching brief, and, where possible, located to the OS map. Structural remains to the north and east of the Portwall seen during works on other areas of the development were largely of 18th/19th century construction and were associated with both domestic and industrial processes taking place across the site from the 13th century to the present day. The most archaeologically significant feature within the Temple Quay development was undoubtedly the Portwall, which bisected the site along a south-west to north-east alignment. The Portwall was constructed in the 13th century as part of the southern defences, and boundary to medieval Bristol. Recent archaeological excavations showed that large sections of the Portwall, its bastions and towers, remained largely intact. [Au(abr)]
