Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed development. There was no evidence in the immediate vicinity but the topography meant it would have been suitable for early settlement. The potential for the presence of Roman archaeology was high. A small excavation c.50m south east of the site had uncovered a metalled road surface with Roman and medieval pottery suggesting a road ran through the site, with possibly roadside buildings. The archaeological potential for the early and later medieval periods was high as the site lay c.500m from a large early medieval cemetery, which indicated nearby settlement, possibly on the site. During the later medieval period the road became known as Pilgrims Way due to the large number of pilgrims that travelled the road, presumably on their way to the Holy Land. If tenement plots shown on the 1841 map were of medieval origin, then there was the potential for the backyards of tenement plots to contain rubbish pits. The potential for post-medieval archaeology was high and at least two buildings were shown in the south-western part of the site in 1841. The build up of 'Made Ground' across the site would have sealed any archaeological presence in the subsoil. [Au(adp)] |
