Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the extraction of aggregate. Although there were no indications of archaeological remains within the site, the relative density of cropmarks and known archaeological remains in the locality (particularly Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman sites) suggested that the land had some archaeological potential. The second phase of work involved the excavation of 13 trial trenches. The trenches revealed archaeological deposits to the north with the main focus existing in the centre of the study area. Early to Middle Iron Age field boundary ditches were uncovered in the centre of the study area. A scatter of pits and postholes were also found in this area but the sterile nature of their fills and the fills of the ditches suggested that these features were not related to occupation. Domestic refuse recovered from the features in the north of the Study Area indicated that the main focus of occupation was likely to be to the north. A layer of overburden extended across the north and centre of the Study Area and could be attributed to deposits derived from an adjacent gravel pit to the east. [Au(abr)]
