Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed construction of an office building and car park. It was clear from the SMR that the archaeological potential was relatively good in this area. The centre of the town had a high concentration of material relating to the early medieval period and onwards, associated with the Abbey and settlement that formed as a consequence. Possible Late Bronze Age urns and two Palaeolithic hand axes had been recorded from the vicinity. It was however, unlikely that the development area, so close to the river, would have produced settlement evidence, although the locality would have been a good provider of natural resources and evidence of its exploitation may have been evident. Early cartographic evidence revealed that the site was developed from at least the mid 18th century, and very likely for some time prior to this, owing to the areas proximity to the river crossing point.
