Abstract: |
Chance discoveries since the early 19th century have indicated the potential of the site for archaeological remains. A Roman vicus or small town, had been identified in the area from excavations since 1976. This appeared to involve domestic and industrial activity along the course of the main Ermine Street, as well as extending into some back plots. A possible road-side shrine or temple has been postulated, and several peripheral cemeteries identified. This assessment has suggested that the area was still extremely rich in archaeological remains, especially from the Roman period. [Au(abr)] |
