Abstract: |
Six trial trenches revealed evidence of occupation dating from the 12th century to the present. 12th century upright timbers, probably part of a fence line, were revealed on a similar alignment to timbers of a river revetment recorded on an adjacent site. Overlying these timbers were cobbled surfaces, make up deposits and the walls of a 14th century building, part of which had survived as a standing wall within the present building. 13th/14th century artefacts were recovered from material that had been deposited onto the riverbank in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The location and depth of the deposits, artefacts and the contemporary occupation surfaces east of them suggested that the conjectured line of the 13th century riverfront was approximately correct.
