Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken to address the condition on planning permission for the construction of residential student accommodation. The evaluation involved the opening of four machine-excavated trenches and revealed that large parts of the site had been successively basemented throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. This activity cut through the naturally formed clayey silt, brickearth-type deposits down to the underlying river terrace gravels and removed any archaeological remains that may have existed in these areas. In parts of the site where basementing had not been so severe and the subsoil had survived, this was found to contain modern pottery and other finds, which would have been consistent with its known recent historical usage as gardens and orchards. No finds or features apparently earlier than the 19th century were identified and no further archaeological work was recommended in connection with this development. [Au(abr)] |
