Abstract: |
Mr A Marlowe excavated a single trial trench on the north side of the church in a search for lost Shakespearean plays and documents. At the bottom of the trench a deposit of brown clay contained fragments of lias limestone and floor tile. It was overlain by dark grey clay with mixed rubble containing iron nails and window glass probably associated with the 17th century rebuild of the church. The lower layer was therefore likely to predate a Shakespearean connection. [Au] |
