Abstract: |
The assessment site lay in the core of the village, adjacent to the medieval Baldock - Hitchin road, within the probable area of any earlier medieval settlement at Whitwell. No archaeological finds had been recorded in the area, although prehistoric cropmark sites were known from the general area as well as Roman finds and the probable line of a Roman road. The former Eagle & Child PH dated from the 15th or 16th century. Archaeological remains relating to the building and possibly the remains of additional buildings had the potential to be present within the site. [AIP] |
