Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that several findspots of prehistoric and Roman artefacts had been recorded in the surrounding area, and that an undated round barrow lay to the south-east. Finds had included a Bronze Age dagger and copper alloy object, Iron Age and Roman coins, Mesolithic and Neolithic flints and other prehistoric stone objects. An undated boundary ditch lay 250m to the west. The proposal site itself had been used for agricultural purposes prior to the construction of water filter tanks at the beginning of the 20th century. It was noted that the tanks would have truncated any archaeological deposits which may have existed across much of the site, with the exception of an area towards the centre and the spaces between the filter beds, most of which were only a few metres wide. Half of the central area was to be set aside as open ground within the development. It was concluded that further archaeological work at the site would not be necessary, although the excavation of trial trenches within the central area could be advisable in the event that the development design were altered.
