Abstract: |
The assessment showed that the site lay within very close proximity to the Late Saxon and medieval town. In addition, it was immediately adjacent to the bridge over the River Wey and there was a strong possibility of features relating to the control of the crossing having been placed there. It seemed probable that this low lying ground, would have been subject to periodic flooding in earlier times, and this may have restricted its suitability for settlement. A variety of finds had been made in the local area. These ranged from a few Mesolithic flints, Saxon cemeteries to the south-west, the excavations of the Dominican Friary and the historic town of Guildford itself. More specific to the site itself was the early map evidence, which showed that the site had been occupied by buildings since the early 17th century, and for an unknown period before. [Au(adp)] |
