Abstract:
The archaeological evaluation revealed a surprising depth of made ground all along the north side of the Priory. A layer containing only 12th-13th century pottery at a depth of 1.2m was identified, cut by north walls of the hall range of the post-medieval mansion house, which survived up to 0.35m below the modern ground level. To the north of the wall were post-medieval ground surfaces and a 19th century brick surface. In trench 2, an apparent 2.25m depth of deposits contained the remains of a 16th/17th century outbuilding, demolished in the 1860s, covered by later 19th and 20th century demolition and landscaping layers. Trenches 3 and 4 investigated a proposed temporary roadway along the line of 19th century driveways to the north west of the Priory. Both trenches located surviving gravel driveway surfaces at a depth of 0.2-0.4m. In trench 3, in a depth of deposit of 2.85m, there was a series of garden walls, the earliest undated, with layers of post-medieval landscaping to their north. In trench 4 there was a total 1.75m of deposit, also largely made up of post-medieval landscaping. [Au(abr)]
