Abstract: |
The remains of a once substantial wall were recorded underneath the milking parlour floor, which may have formed a peripheral building of the known medieval hospital. The dating evidence retrieved from this wall suggests a 13th-14th century origin. A previously unknown buttress was also discovered on the north east corner of the existing house (Priory Farm), which has a minimum of seven courses surviving beneath ground level. A service trench to the font of the house revealed three surviving wall footings of between 1.0-1.2 metres width, which appeared to extent at right angles from the front of the house. Other service trenches near the centre of the complex revealed a range of walls in vary states of preservation. The service trenches and sump to the west of the milking parlour revealed no archaeology, indicating that this area of the site was outside of the monastic complex. [Au(abr)] |
