Abstract:
Reports on discoveries made during construction of a lake in the grounds of Caldecot Country Park in the late 1980s. An integrated programme of environmental and archaeological investigation was undertaken on a complex sequence of waterlogged palaeochannel sediments dating from the Neolithic to LBA/EIA transitional period. Approximately 5,000 pieces of wood were examined in detail, indicating a broad range of species and providing evidence of woodland management and woodworking practices. The site is also thought to have produced one of the largest faunal assemblages from BA Wales, in which sheep were predominant. The stratigraphic sequence is supported by radiocarbon dates. Environmental and artefactual analysis is presented with the following contributions: `Alluvial sedimentation and environmental change' by Mark Taylor (74--83); `The palaeobotanical evidence' by Astrid Caseldine & Kate Barrow (83--117); `The diatom evidence' by Nigel G Cameron (117--28); `The molluscs' by Martin Bell & Su Johnson (128--41); `The ostracod evidence' by Eric Robinson (141--50); `Insect fauna' by Peter Osbourne (150--6). Discussion of the wood assemblage includes: `Wood identification' by Su Johnson (158--63); `Wood species selection and woodworking techniques' by Richard Brunning & Aidan O'Sullivan (163--87); `Dendrochronology' by Jennifer Hillam (187--94); `Roundwood studies' by Ruth Morgan (194--204); `The wooden artefacts' by Caroline Earwood (204--9); `The boat fragments' by Sean McGrail (210--17). Bones and artefacts are reported in: `The animal bones' by Finbar McCormick (218--40), which includes `Birds, fish amphibians and small mammals' by Sheila Hamilton-Dyer (234--5); `The bone artefacts' by Joyce Compton (242--3); `The Bronze Age pottery' by Ann Woodward (243--5), accompanied by a `Note on the petrology' by David Williams (245--6); `The stone from the excavations' by Steve Howe (246); `The flint industry' by Stephen Aldhouse-Green (246--9); `The metalwork' by Peter Northover (249--53); `The amber bead' and a note on `Roman ceramics' both by Joyce Compton (253). Appendices comprise `Plant macrofossil tables' (293--329) and dendrochronological `Ring-width tables' (331--4).
