Abstract:
Continuing excavations at the site also known as St Adrian's Chapel focused on the chapter house and part of the cemetery. Two thirteenth-century column bases were found in situ in the chapter house, and demolition debris contained roof tile, window glass, lead cames, and other architectural fragments. The structure had been remodelled probably in the early post-medieval period into a range of outhouses or workshops. At least twenty-four inhumations were examined and are divided into two groups: those in coffins and covered by a cairn, and those in unlined graves or long cists. Groups of disarticulated bones among the long cists suggest that defleshing of some bodies was practised. Appendices comprise a `List of contexts' (29-30), a `List of small finds' (31), a catalogue of the `Human bone archive' (32-7), `Palaeoenvironmental investigations...' by Richard Topping (38), medieval and later `Coins' (39), a `Glass catalogue, 1992 and 1993 material' by Robin Murdoch (39-42),`Iron working residues' by Irene Cullen (43-7), `Trace-metal analyses of drain fill 572...' by Michael Cressey (48-50), `Mammal bones' by Jennifer Thomas (51-6), `Fish bones' by Ruby Ceron Carrasco (57-68), and the `Ceramic catalogue' by Bob Will (69-73).
