Abstract: |
Summarises the results of the excavation of deeply stratified archaeological deposits in two adjacent caves situated in a narrow inlet (threatened by marine erosion). The deposits contained marine shell and mammaland fish bones. Artefacts included worked antler and bone, pottery (some late Norse), iron rivets (suggesting use of the inlet for shelter and repair of boats), and recent material such as bottle glass (some sherds apparently `knapped'). There was no evidence of prehistoric activity, although some lower deposits suggest Iron Age activity. Cursory examination of a third cave produced some Late Neo/EBA pottery. Appendices comprise `Environmental Sampling: a provisional statement' by Diane Aldritt (27--9), a summary context list (29--30), a catalogue of photographs (30--2), and a `Post excavation strategy and costing' (33--5). |
