Abstract: |
Describes studies up to 1986 to introduce more recent work on this site, badly eroded and still disappearing. Viking and Late Norse Caithness is discussed in terms of place-name and saga evidence and the very patchy archaeological material, to provide a context for Freswick Links (previously worked on by A O Curle and V G Childe). The artefact assemblage offers no evidence for how the large-scale fishing (demonstrated by the prominence of fishbones in the midden) was carried on. A range of domestic animals was kept and cultivation traces are backed up by oats and barley finds. |
